CIVIL WAR GENERALS-- CONFEDERATE

All poems & illustrations copyright © 2006 by Thomas A. Pearson.  All rights reserved.

ROBERT E. LEE (1809-1870)

Robert E. Lee
most definitely
was not lacking
when it came to attacking,

yet sometimes it seems
that the best strategy
might have been not to send
in the ANV.

     THOMAS JONATHAN JACKSON (1824-1863)

JOHN BELL HOOD (1831-1879)

Mad, proud Hood
never ceases:
he cuts his fearsome
army into little pieces.

What war does to men
can be such a crime:
the war has dissembled
mad Hood a bit at a time.

An arm at Gettysburg
made moot,
in Georgia a leg
lost at the root.

He dreams of hard-fought
victories won;
he schemes, and old
Joe Johnston's gone.

He challenges old "Rock" Thomas
and Thomas decidedly beats him,
and mad Hood's fever dream of
country and glory in the end defeats him.

NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST (1821-1877)

Let us all now
join the chorus
and sing the praises
of Bedford Forrest.

He was unschooled-
not a grad of the Point-
and yet the South
chose
to anoint

this man a general,
but they had reason
for he was a fighter
in every season

and what is more,
he had a plan
to win the war,
did this proud man

that he once divulged
to a gracious hostess:
"Get there fustest
with the mostest!"
